Reading is a great way to pass the time when you’re bored and let’s face it, you get bored a lot during your college life. Maybe your friends are out of town or maybe you don’t have the cash to go out somewhere nice, but in general, you could say that being bored goes hand in hand with college. Luckily for all of us, there are some great books out there that can keep you entertained for a good day or two. To help you beat the boredom, we’ve listed out a couple of books we think are great. Here are 5 books that every student should read:

- The Catcher In The Rye by J.D Salinger: There is a lot of controversy surrounding this book with several professionals claiming that the book has inspired some people to murder particular famous people. Former Beatles front-man John Lennon was actually murdered by a man who was carrying a copy of this book when he was caught. It is because of incidents like these that the US government had decided to ban this book from schools and colleges until recently. The book itself is focused on a character named Holden Caulfield and his experiences after being expelled from his school. There’s not too much of a plot going on but the writing and language in this book are quite stellar. A big recommendation for someone who doesn’t mind the lack of plot and is looking for some philosophy in their literature.
2. 1984 by George Orwell: The term “Big Brother is watching” actually originates from this book. Though it definitely does not cover teen-related topics or even attempts to appeal to the average teenager, this is a book that not only all students should read but everyone should read. It is not only an interesting story about a dystopian society in the future, but also contains some important philosophies and guidelines for governments all around the world. The controversy of the National Security Agency in the US spying on citizens and world leaders worldwide through mass data collection mirrors some of the behaviors of the world government in this book. Definitely check this one out if you’re into Science Fiction and also if you hate government and politics in general.
3. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis: This book is about a peaceful businessman who totally does not kill anyone at all. That’s sarcasm by the way. Though this book is probably the most twisted piece of literature on our list today, we cannot deny that it is highly entertaining. In all seriousness, this book is about a very successful businessman who moonlights as a serial killer with no remorse. The book is a great journey into the psyche of executives and businessmen as well as it tries to convey to the reader that perhaps serial killers and businessmen aren’t too different after all since both of them require a serious lack of remorse to be successful at what they do. Another fun quality about this book is the fact that it is written from the perspective of an unreliable narrator, which keeps the reader guessing about what is actually happening and what isn’t. This book is for you thriller-lovers although I should say that if you like a happy ending, don’t read this one. On an additional note, the movie adaptation of this book is quite fantastic as well.
4. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas: When we were reading this one, we honestly thought that it was written by a seasoned veteran writer. Turns out that this was Angie Thomas’ first book she ever wrote and published. The Hate U Give is based on a short story that was written by Angie Thomas that was in turn inspired by the controversy of police shootings in the US. The book covers the story of 16-year-old Starr Carter who is African-American. She ends up witnessing the shooting of her childhood friend by the hands of the police and as a result, takes up activism to protest the vile actions taken by the police. We won’t spoil it for you but it is definitely a great read. Though most of the elements in this book are based on American culture and issues, it is a worthwhile piece of literature that anyone should read as it really helps to explain how harmful racism can be.
5. Lord Of The Flies by William Golding: This one is a pretty old classic that’s frequently assigned as a reading assignment to school students which is actually why some of us here were put off with the idea of actually reading this book completely. But Lord Of The Flies really does transcend its academic nature and is a very interesting look into how individuals without the necessary experience and skills can end up ruining their undertakings. The book about a group of young boys from Britain who get stranded on an island and decide to form their own society and government, much to their failure. Honestly, the reason they failed wasn’t the fact that they were kids, but the fact that they were stupid. You’ll see for yourself if you decide to read this book. We definitely recommend it to people who want to feel better about themselves after a bad day.
