Campus Life
Manipal University has a number of measures to ensure that students feel safe and secure on campus. Below, I’ll give one example. But here is a list of the different things MAHE takes into consideration, ensuring a secure on-campus experience for all students.
Anti-Ragging Squad
I figured this is would be useful to mention, given that Manipal’s anti-ragging system looks extremely well thought out. Assuming, of course, that the system actually works and is active.
Nonetheless, MAHE appears to have a rather strong anti-ragging squad, with what seems to be a comprehensive response and safety system. It looks like if these measures are actually enforced, then Manipal has a pretty safe campus in terms of bullying. They also have a response to situations where the person ragging does not come forward. Here are the measures MAHE takes against ragging:
- Suspension from attending classes and academic privileges
- Withholding/withdrawing scholarship/fellowship and other benefits
- Forfeiting campus placement opportunities/recommendations
- Debarring from appearing in any test/examination or other evaluation processes
- Withholding of results
- Debarring from representing the institution in any regional, national or international meet, tournament, youth festival, etc.
- Suspension/ expulsion from the hostel
- Cancellation of admission
- Rustication from the institution for a period, ranging from 1 to 4 semesters
- Expulsion from the institution and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution for a specific period
- Fine to be paid
- Collective punishment: When the persons committing or abetting the crime of ragging are not identified, the institution shall resort to collective punishment as a deterrent to ensure community pressure on the potential raggers.
Interesting Facts about Manipal University
Okay, no more boring you with general information about Manipal University. One last thing, there is a Manipal Blog, from which I have taken a few of the facts below. The Blog is intended to separate fact from myths. So, check it out if you want more information. Alright, let’s finally get to the interesting facts.
1) Food is Not That Bad
Apparently, a lot of people have the impression that the food at MAHE has little variety and lacks flavour, assuming that rice and rasam are really the only things people get to eat. As such, it seems, people claim that an urge to flee will soon overcome you.
However, the person who wrote on Manipal Blog claims, ” “Manipal is food heaven! From Dominos and Subway to Snack Shack and Saiba I never run out of choices. Manipal is a great place for foodaholics! Majority of my friends here agree with this. PS: The ‘Chapatti’ of FC sucks though.” So, that’s one myth corrected I suppose.
Here are a few of the many food options MAHE has to offer (it’s certainly way more than I had in college):
- KMC Food Court
- Yo Dragon – healthy oil-free Chinese platter with Hakka noodles, fried rice, veg Manchurian starter and soup. The speciality here is the Prawn Manchurian platter.
- Hangyo Saiba- tasty North Indian
- Asian K. Flavours- Malaysian
- HOT CHICKS- best crispy fried chicken for 60 bucks per piece
- Scirocco Thai Continental
- Hangyo Ice Cream
2) MAHE is Not Filled with Spoilt Brats
While a lot the students that attend Manipal University are wealthy, the impression that they are also spoilt is mistaken, claims the author of the post on MaipalBlog. I suppose the general impression is that, on account of being “rich”, students are careless, which is a sweeping generalisation.
3) Manipal Academy of Higher Education Philately and Numismatic Club (MUPNC)
This is a rather unique club dedicated to the study of postage stamps and coins, working with Dakshina Karnataka Philately and Numismatic Association, Mangalore. Looks like a great club for stamp and coin collectors and enthusiasts.
4) Volunteer Services Organization (VSO)
VSO looks like a great initiative towards aiding those in need. Volunteers have an opportunity to learn new skills, like teamwork, ensuring personal growth and an empathetic outlook towards others. Over 3,000 students and faculty members are a part of VSO, participating in a wide range of community, social and organisational efforts.
Part of VSO missions statement reads, “VSO aims to develop the spirit of selfless service by responding to the community’s needs, addressing the issues of society, and developing the leadership and learning skills of the volunteers…We come together in hopes of forging a path to a better society.” Here is a general overview of VSO:
Objectives:
- To respond to community needs
- Address the issues of society
- To develop the leadership potential of the students
- Enhance student learning
Weekly Programmes/Visits:
- Jyothi – visit to asare, a home for special children
- Sanjeevani – visit to pediatric ward of kasturba hospital
- Aarambh – visit to sri krishna balaniketan
- Clean Manipal Campaign
- Blood Donation Camp
- Visit to Bijapur Slums
- Visit to Snehasadan – home for HIV positive children
5) Diversity
Owing to the fact that Manipal University has a lot of Non-resident Indians and foreign nationals, as well as Indians from all over the country, MAHE has great diversity. An atmosphere like this allows one to interact with, and learn about, different cultures and lifestyles. This in turn allows for an enhanced understanding, and acceptance, of diverse cultures.
6) Great Facilities for Extra-Curricular Activities
Manipal University does indeed have a wide variety of facilities catering to various needs. The Marena Gym, restaurants, bars and theatres are a few examples. MAHE also has a number of other facilities and services like:
- The MIT Innovation Centre
- Data Centre
- Elearning Initiative
- Manipal Group-Wide Connectivity (Manipal GWC)
- Picture Archival Communication System (PACS)
- I-ON Services (Wireless Campus)
7) NOT a Drug Den
You will find a number of posts on Manipal Blog on this subject. The first lines to the link I have just referenced say:
“If you go to Urban Dictionary and click up the term Manipal, you’ll get two definitions. The second one put up in April 08, 2007 by Balu G reads,
“A small town in Karnataka, India. Has a university where rich parents send their spoilt kids to so that they can booze, smoke weed and get laid, and maybe get a degree in the process. A bloody hot place to be in, esp. from March to August.
Manipal’s the easiest place to get a professional degree from, in India.”
Well, Manipal is not a drug den — it is taken out of context and singularly attacked. When you consider the rates of substance use and abuse across various states in India, Manipal certainly does not measure up. In fact, by comparison, drug use in Manipal is relatively low. These claims are notwithstanding global rates of drug use, especially marijuana. A lot of people seem to connect the “rich kids” to “drug abuse”, which again is a sweeping generalisation.
The thing is, all campuses have students who use drugs and students who don’t. If you don’t want to be involved with drugs like marijuana, then simply don’t get involved. The choice is still yours and Manipal University offers a great education, which should be the decisive factor in choosing an educational institution.
