Whether you think of stationery as a necessity or a luxury you splurge your pocket money, have a stationery essentials list to ensure you’re never in a bind!
1. Blank Notebooks
If your love for stationery is insatiable like most people at StuCred, you probably have multiple fancy blank notebooks lying around your house still waiting to be used. There’s nothing that gives me as much satisfaction as buying an aesthetically pleasing blank notebook. It stimulates productivity and keeps me motivated to stick to my to-do lists. As far as a student is concerned, notebooks for college, a to-do list and planner, are definitely the bare minimum.
2. Pens (blue, black and even multi-coloured ones)
Pens are an absolute staple and aside from your standard blue and black pens, having multi-coloured pens is a good idea. If you’re into journaling or keeping organized notes multi-coloured pens are essential. By using a variety of eye-catching colours different paragraphs of varying importance can be identified.
3. Pencils (regular/mechanical)
Pencils are better than pens for in-text notes. They prevent ink-smudges and keep the book looking clean. I prefer a regular HB pencil over an easily breakable mechanical pencil. I end up losing the barely visible lead sticks and run through them too soon for my convenience. However, that is a personal preference and you should stick to whatever you’re comfortable with.
4. Sharpener/ Pencil Leads
Depending on your preference in pencils, keep the necessary tool on hand. Nobody enjoys writing with a blunt pencil. Pencil lead sticks need to be stored carefully (a task I am incapable of). There’s no worse feeling than clicking your mechanical pencil and have the last small piece of lead fall out. If you prefer the traditional route, try to get a sharpener with a built in storage for the waste. Otherwise, you’ll spend more time looking for a bin than making notes.
5. Eraser
Although most pencils have an eraser attached, it is better to have an actual eraser with you. Besides the size and quality of the attached erasers, it can easily be misplaced.
6. Ruler:
If your course/subject requires drawing diagrams, rulers are quintessential. Even if you don’t, rulers are handy to underline important sentences and without a mess.
7. Sticky Notes:
Sticky notes are my crutch because I have a poor memory. If I don’t have all my tasks for the day written on a sticky note, they will go uncompleted. A regular pack of post-its will take you far (if you are forgetful, trust me they will change your life).
8. Paper Clips:
Often staplers may not be available or you may require a temporary way of binding sheets together. In such cases, paper clips are your best friend. Keep different colored paper clips and if you’re feeling creative, color-code them. For example, very important documents can have a red clip, while unimportant or completed ones can be bound with a white clip.
9. A4 Sheets:
You may not even think of A4 sheets when thinking of stocking up on stationery, however, a blank sheet of paper is necessary. I often tear blank pages out of notebooks. Having A4 sheets nearby keeps the notebook intact and ensures the sheet being used does not have jagged edges.
10. Scissors:
You never know when you might need a scissor. Whether it is to cut off labels and tags or separate different parts of a sheet, it is a nifty tool. It may not be at the top of your essentials list, but having a pair nearby is more useful than you’d think.
11. Glue Stick:
Often applications/forms require you to stick a passport-sized photograph in the provided space. Not having a glue stick on such occasions is frustrating (this comes from personal experience). Glue sticks are for paper, cardboard, foam, etc. If you require something stronger and for more sturdy materials, consider investing in a glue gun
12. Folders/Binders:
I often find crumpled pieces of paper I’d have been looking for days, at the bottom of my desk drawer. However as soon as I started using a binder, I would store all my sheets in them and now I have no problem finding any of my study materials.
